Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- ⅔ cup baking soda (for boiling water)
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- Coarse salt for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in flour and salt until a dough forms. Knead for 5–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal portions. Roll each into a 20-inch rope and form the pretzel shape.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a gentle boil. Drop pretzels in for 20–30 seconds, then remove and place on prepared sheets.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.
- Brush warm pretzels with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse salt. Serve warm or store for later.
Notes
- Make sure the water is warm but not hot to ensure the yeast activates properly.
- For extra flavor, you can add seasonings to the dough.
